Where this comes from
Seven principles for a life worth living
In 1966 the Japanese psychiatrist Mieko Kamiya set out seven conditions for ikigai-kan — the feeling of a life worth living. She identified them while working at the Nagashima Aiseien sanatorium, a leprosy colony on a remote Japanese island, asking what gave people a sense of purpose and meaning when almost everything else had been taken from them.
She found them in people who had lost almost everything else, so they apply just as much when a job or role ends.
Her central finding: when one of these needs is not met, it does not simply go unnoticed — it becomes a stressor. Which is worth knowing if you feel unsettled and cannot say why. It may not be the job, or the year, or your age. It may be one of these seven running on empty.
This is not the Venn diagram most people find when they search for ikigai. That version — what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, what you can be paid for — is a Spanish invention, and it assumes you need a job or one big purpose. Kamiya's is more holistic: a feeling across seven areas of a life, one that changes day to day. As she put it, it is not a framework or a checklist. It is a way of feeling.
- 01Life satisfaction (Atarimae no shiawase)Contentment and enjoyment in ordinary days.
- 02Growth & changeHaving chances to learn, develop and try something new.
- 03A bright futureHaving something to look forward to, and hope for what lies ahead.
- 04Belonging (Kyōmei)Having relationships where you feel understood and connected.
- 05FreedomHaving a real say in how you live, within the limits you face.
- 06Meaning & valueLiving in line with your values, and feeling that your life matters.
- 07Being who you areLiving as who you really are, with room for your abilities and interests in your life.
